Client completed the wheel of life audit and felt she wanted to prioritise business. After spending 10 minutes discussing the ideas she had and the motives I realised she seemed incredibly focused on her own sense of self and confidence having been lost due to a recent break up and that she felt a new career path may help her find herself. I asked her if I could change the subject matter briefly and asked how she felt since her relationship broke down. She confidently sat up and said:

“It has of course been tough, but I think I’m through the worst of it.”

I asked her if it had affected her confidence and self belief and used an example of how relationships can have a huge impact on many areas of our life, client R began to open up about how she wanted to try a new career path in order to make her ex see that she was better off without him and what a mistake he had made. I asked if she felt deep down that this was a sustainable and measurable motivating factor. She asked me to elaborate, so I followed by asking her how she could measure how or when her ex would realise this therefore completing her mission, I then asked if she chose a career path based on this and she was somehow able to measure it, what then…would she be happy in her career if it wasn’t really chosen with her future in mind, but a need to provoke an external reaction or validation? At first, she became, understandably a little defensive, but soon she said,

“you’re right, how will I even know what he feels and even if he feels rubbish what then? I could be stuck in a job I don’t even enjoy just because I wanted him to want me again.”

I asked her if she wanted to move on with her life rebuilding her own sense of self so she no longer felt the need to care or desire a reaction of any kind from him, until she feels almost neutral towards him, Client R seemed excited by this possibility and we moved on to focus area being personal development. We started the ‘Untethering’ programme.
