Coaching Journal: The Session That Wasn’t About Productivity
This week, a client arrived convinced they needed help with motivation.
“I’ve done nothing all week,” they told me. “I need to get myself together.”
As we began talking, it became clear that productivity wasn’t the issue.
The client had spent the week supporting family members through a difficult situation, attending appointments, managing household responsibilities, and navigating a series of emotionally demanding conversations.
From the outside, they had achieved a great deal.
From the inside, however, they felt they had failed because they hadn’t progressed on the personal goals they had set for themselves.
It’s a pattern I see often.
Many of us judge ourselves according to what we planned to do rather than what we actually managed to carry.
As the session unfolded, we explored the difference between laziness and exhaustion.
The client wasn’t avoiding their goals. They were depleted.
By the end of the session, the focus had shifted entirely. Instead of creating another ambitious to-do list, we created a recovery plan.
Rest became the priority.
Self-compassion became the homework.
Sometimes coaching isn’t about pushing forward.
Sometimes it’s about recognising how far you’ve already travelled and giving yourself permission to stop carrying everything alone.
